What youth sports photos cost in Massachusetts

Youth sports photos get sold a few different ways, and the way you pay shapes what you get. This guide explains the common setups, what pushes a price up or down, what to ask before you pay, and exactly what Rival Imaging charges.

Four common ways sports photos get paid for

Most youth and high school sports photos come through one of these four setups, and plenty of families use more than one in a season.

Picture day packages

A photographer sets up for one day and shoots a team photo and a portrait of every player. Families usually pick a package of prints or digital files from an order form, often before picture day, and the photos arrive later.

It's a good way to get the posed team photo, but it has no game action.

Per photo downloads

A photographer shoots the game and posts the photos in an online gallery, and families buy only the ones they want, one photo at a time. You see each photo before you pay.

Check whether you get the full size file with no watermark, and how long the gallery stays up.

Hiring a photographer by the hour or the game

A family or a team books a photographer for a set amount of time, like one game or a whole evening, and gets a set of edited photos. You pay for the photographer's time and editing up front.

It makes the most sense for one big night, like senior night, or one athlete you want covered start to finish.

League or organizer paid coverage

A league, school, booster club or tournament organizer brings in a photographer for the season or the event. Some deals are paid by the organization, some are built around photo sales to families, and some mix the two.

Whatever the deal, a league board should see a written proposal before anything is signed.

What drives the price of sports photos

Two prices can look far apart and still both be fair, because they cover different amounts of work. These four things make the biggest difference.

Coverage time

One game is less work than pregame through postgame, and one event is less work than a whole season. Ask what's covered: warmups, the ceremony, the game and the family photo after.

Editing

Every photo you receive was picked from a lot of frames, then cropped and color corrected. A package that promises more edited photos takes more editing time, and the price reflects it.

Delivery

Full size downloads with no watermark are worth more than small web files, and a gallery that stays up longer gives you more time to buy.

Prints

Prints add lab costs and shipping. Compare print prices size by size, and check whether shipping is charged per print or per order.

Questions to ask before you pay

Ask these four questions, whoever you buy from.

Do I get the full size photo with no watermark?

Ask before you buy. A small or watermarked file can look fine on a phone and fall apart on a print or a fence banner.

How long can I buy the photos?

Some galleries stay up all season and some come down after a few days. Know the deadline so you don't miss it.

What happens if the game is rained out?

If you booked a photographer for a game, find out whether the booking moves with the game or gets refunded.

Who can see the gallery?

Ask whether the gallery is public, whether it shows up on Google, and how to get a photo of your child taken down.

What Rival Imaging charges

These are Rival's prices for families, the same ones on the prices page. You pay online with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card.

$2.99

Each game photo during the game

Rival posts a post game gallery for every regular season game it shoots: the game's photos, posted while the game is on. You find your athlete by jersey number and buy only the photos you want, full size with no watermark.

$5

Each game photo after the final whistle

After the game ends, photos are $5 each. The gallery stays up for 48 hours after the final whistle, then it comes down.

Prints

Prints shipped home

You can order any photo from the game's gallery as a print: 4x6 $5, 5x7 $10 or 8x10 $18, plus $8 shipping per order.

$50

Game Spotlight

A Rival photographer follows your athlete for one game. You get 20 to 30 edited photos in their own private gallery within 48 hours.

$150

Big Night

A Rival photographer covers pregame, the whole game, and postgame with family and teammates. You get 40 to 60 edited photos, and the package is made for senior nights.

$50

Social Reel

The Rival crew cuts one game into a 30 to 60 second vertical reel for Instagram, TikTok and Shorts.

$70

Mic'd Up

Your athlete wears a wireless mic for the game, and their voice is cut together with the action, with a vertical version for social. It needs a parent's OK, plus the coach's and the league's.

$210

Pregame + Postgame + Highlights

You get arrival and warmups, game highlights, and postgame with family and teammates in one video, plus a vertical cut.

$140

College Highlight Tape

This is recruiting video for college coaches, at $140 a game. The game is shot on a broadcast video setup and the full game tape is delivered, and a highlights cut is $70 more.

$50

Prebook a game day

Prebooking means asking Rival to shoot a game that isn't on its schedule, up to 7 days ahead. It's $50 a day for the photographer and equipment, and families still pay only for the photos they want.

Quoted

Media days

Media days, team photo days and portraits are quoted, because a whole league and one team need very different days.

Travel on the North Shore and around Greater Boston is included. A game more than 45 minutes from Peabody may add a travel fee, and you see it before you pay.

How leagues work with Rival

Leagues work with Rival through a season partnership instead of a price list. Rival meets with the league's board about the schedule, the fields and what families and sponsors want, and the league gets a written proposal before anything is signed.

A partnership can include a live gallery for every game Rival shoots, media days, highlight video and broadcast. It can also include a share of photo sales for the league. See how league partnerships work
